We compare the ingredient list, the finish and the wear against the original, then say which of the three actually match and which do not. A pick that shares the actives but dries down differently is labelled that way rather than sold as identical. Every guide also carries price and price per ounce so the saving is a number, not a claim.

Both, and each guide says which is which. Some picks come from editor testing, some from reading INCI lists side by side, some from consistent community reports. Where we have not tested something, the guide says so instead of implying we have.

How current are the prices in the results?

Each guide shows the date its prices were checked, and the finder repeats those prices. Retailers move them, so treat a price here as the figure on our research date and check the retailer before buying.
