Scent is where they separate. OSEA runs grapefruit, lime and cypress over a sweet mango-mandarin drydown. VOYA leads on lime and mandarin, then layers lemon, clove bud, basil, cedarwood and vetivert, which reads herbal and faintly medicinal rather than beachy. Rosehip and evening primrose sit second and third where OSEA has passionfruit, rice bran, acai and babassu, so it feels a shade richer on the skin and takes a beat longer to sink.

Price is the problem. $67 for 100 ml is $19.71 an ounce against OSEA's $10.40. If you came here to spend less, this is not your answer. It suits someone who wants the seaweed high on the list and does not mind paying above OSEA for it. Clove bud and basil oils high in the fragrance stack also make it the wrong choice if essential oils set your skin off.

This is the one that genuinely saves money and the one with the biggest asterisk. The INCI opens safflower seed oil, isopropyl myristate, isododecane, caprylic/capric triglyceride. Isododecane is a volatile that evaporates off the skin, which is why reviewers keep describing it as vanishing on contact. Become Betty called the oil the star of the set, absorbing almost instantly with no greasy residue and performing like something far more expensive. OSEA reaches a similar finish through passionfruit and rice bran oils instead, but what your hand feels ten seconds later is close.

The marine story is thinner than the label suggests. Chlorella vulgaris, Laminaria ochroleuca and Crithmum maritimum sit at positions 16, 17 and 18, below benzyl alcohol, rosemary leaf extract and tocopherol. On OSEA's list, Undaria pinnatifida is second. You are buying the texture, not the seaweed.

Scent is jasmine and sea salt. A shopper quoted in Yahoo Shopping's write-up called it fresh and clean, and less citrusy than the OSEA oil, which is a fair way to put it. The overlap is narrower than the name suggests. Sunflower seed oil opens both INCI lists, and Citrus paradisi peel oil appears on both, though it sits ninth here against third on OSEA's. Fragrance (parfum) is Nécessaire's second ingredient, so most of what you smell is a composed grapefruit accord rather than the peel oil doing the work, and geranium, neroli and red pepper take it somewhere sharper and more perfume-shaped than OSEA's soft mango-mandarin base. Castor seed oil at position three makes the first minute heavier than OSEA's, too.

The capsaicin is the real catch, and Nécessaire says so on its own product page: the percentage is high enough to produce a burning sensation at first application. It is there to support the firming and cellulite claims, not for comfort. The ratings show the split. Nécessaire's site carries 4.2 out of 5 from 121 reviews, 15 of them one-star; Ulta lists 4.7 from 3,799 for the OSEA. As a grapefruit body oil with a warming active, this is a good product. As a way to stop paying $52, it does nothing.

Weleda's oil is four things: sesame seed oil, sea buckthorn oil, rosemary leaf extract and a natural essential-oil fragrance. Sesame also appears on OSEA's list, and the instruction is identical, a few drops massaged into damp skin as you come out of the shower. At $21.99 for 3.4 fl oz, or £21.95 in the UK, that is $6.47 an ounce against OSEA's $10.40. A bottle-for-bottle swap saves real money.

The fragrance heads in the same direction OSEA does without arriving at the same place. The allergen declaration lists limonene, citral, geraniol and citronellol, the signature of orange and lemon-family essential oils rather than the grapefruit, lime and cypress accord OSEA uses. Close family, different face.

Two honest caveats. Sesame is a heavier carrier than the sunflower, passionfruit and rice bran blend OSEA works with, so it sits on the skin noticeably longer before it stops feeling like oil; if the OSEA appeals because you can dress two minutes later, factor that in. And the same allergen list runs on into benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate and farnesol, so this is the wrong bottle for anyone reacting to fragrance. Worth saying plainly: despite the name, there is no seaweed in it. Sea buckthorn is a shrub berry.

Naturium's body oil is the best value dry-finish option here: $24.99 for 100 ml at Ulta, or $7.35 an ounce, roughly 30% under OSEA. Caprylic/capric triglyceride and squalane sit third and fourth and do the job OSEA's passionfruit and rice bran oils do, which is to get the oil off the surface fast. Sea buckthorn and rosehip oils follow, and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate at position nine, a stable oil-soluble vitamin C, gives it an antioxidant argument most oils at this price cannot make.

Then the smell. Vanilla planifolia fruit extract sits alongside five lactones, gamma decalactone, gamma-nonalactone, delta-decalactone, delta-dodecalactone and gamma-undecalactone, which together build a warm creamy vanilla. It is well made, and it is the opposite end of the map from grapefruit and cypress. If OSEA's scent is the reason you are reading this, stop at this entry.
