Kérastase Dupes: 5 Cheaper Hair Oils That Match Elixir Ultime on Ingredients

Redken and Kérastase come out of the same company, and Argan-6 reads like Elixir Ultime with the plant-oil budget spent elsewhere. Which bottle you get depends on which side of the Atlantic you buy it. Lookfantastic's UK 100 mL listing opens Isododecane, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Alcohol Denat., Parfum, then argan, so its first three slots are Elixir Ultime's first three slots. The US 3.8 fl oz version, on INKEEDecoder and SkinSAFE, opens Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Dimethicone, argan, with no alcohol at all. That is how Elixir Ultime opened before Kérastase moved it to isododecane.

Either version gives you the mechanism: a carrier that evaporates inside a minute and two silicones that stay behind to flatten the cuticle.

What you lose sits underneath. Elixir Ultime lists camellia, corn germ, argan, marula, pracaxi and camelina before it reaches its allergen block. Argan-6 lists argan and stops. Under a blow-dry or a straightening pass the silicones do nearly all the work and the seed oils are label copy. On dry, porous ends left alone for two days, the extra oils are why Elixir Ultime reads soft rather than slick.

On money: $35 for 3.8 fl oz is $9.21 an ounce against Kérastase's $24.51, a 62% cut per ounce. Redken sells no refill, so unlike Kérastase the saving does not compound after the first bottle.

Garnier publishes the whole list and it is thirteen ingredients long: cyclopentasiloxane, dimethiconol, parfum, argania spinosa kernel oil, then the allergens, tocopherol, sunflower seed oil and a colourant. The first two are how Elixir Ultime opened before Kérastase moved to isododecane, which makes this the closest thing on a drugstore shelf to the older Kérastase finish.

The short list is the argument, not a weakness. Shine from a hair oil is a silicone film, not a botanical, and Garnier's film is the same class of silicone at $2.13 an ounce against $24.51.

Two gaps worth knowing before you buy. The first is scent. Garnier describes it as crisp apple, sun-ripened strawberry and juicy melon, and it is not subtle. Kérastase's is mandarin and freesia over cedarwood and violet, on sandalwood and musk. If the perfume is why you reach for Elixir Ultime, this will irritate you daily.

The second is dose. Parfum is listed third, above the argan, and cyclopentasiloxane is heavier off the bottle than isododecane. A drop that disappears into fine hair from the Kérastase bottle can sit on top of it from this one. Start with half.

Verb publishes its full list, which is unusual at this price, and it runs cyclopentasiloxane, dimethiconol, dimethicone, caprylyl methicone, phenyl trimethicone before it reaches argan, moringa and rice bran oil. Five silicones, three of them low-viscosity, is a different build from Kérastase's three. The practical result is a thinner film, and that is the reason to pick this one. If a normal dose of Elixir Ultime leaves your roots looking washed a day early, this will not.

It also carries polysilicone-15, a UV filter, plus glycerin and hydrolysed soy protein, none of which appear on the Kérastase list. Verb claims 118% more shine, 70% less frizz and heat protection to 450°F. Kérastase claims 230°C, which is 446°F. Both numbers come from the brands' own instrumental tests, not independent ones, and neither should be read as a comparison with the other.

The catch is the bottle. Two fluid ounces for $22 works out at $11 an ounce, less than half Kérastase's $24.51 but five times what Garnier charges. The allergen list is longer than Elixir Ultime's too, with benzyl salicylate, hydroxycitronellal, geraniol, citronellol and hexyl cinnamal added. Anyone reactive to fragrance should skip this and take the Hask, which declares three.

Buy this when hair is coarse, bleached or thirsty enough that a light film vanishes into it. Target's ingredient panel and INKEEDecoder now agree on the list: Dimethicone, Isopropyl Myristate, Dimethiconol, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Parfum, then six allergens. Six functional ingredients, and that is the whole product.

The gap from Kérastase is the first slot. Elixir Ultime opens on isododecane, a hydrocarbon that evaporates and leaves a dry film behind. This opens on dimethicone, which does not evaporate at all. The two esters thin it enough to spread, but it goes on wetter and stays heavier than anything else on this page. On coarse or high-porosity hair that weight is exactly why it works. On fine hair it is why it does not.

At $7.99 for 3.3 fl oz it is $2.42 an ounce against $24.51, and it carries 3,342 Target reviews averaging 4.65, more feedback than everything else here combined.

One thing it will not do is tell you anything about heat. No temperature claim appears on the pack or the retail listing. Kérastase's 230°C figure is its own instrumental test rather than an independent one, but it is a number OGX has chosen not to publish, so at 200°C you are guessing.

Hask's first ingredient is c13-14 isoalkane, a volatile hydrocarbon from the same family as the isododecane at the top of current Elixir Ultime bottles. That fact matters more than the argan does. A hydrocarbon carrier flashes off faster and leaves less behind than the cyclic silicone in the Garnier oil or the dimethicone in the OGX, so in the first minute after application this is the cheap oil that behaves most like the Kérastase. Target's panel runs c13-14 isoalkane, dimethiconol, c10-11 isoalkane, argan kernel oil, keratin amino acids, soybean oil, grape seed oil, orange oil and tocopherol.

$8.69 for 3.3 fl oz is $2.63 an ounce against Kérastase's $24.51, an 89% cut. Target reviewers give it 4.55 from 490 reviews.

Three things it is not. It is not anhydrous: water, butylene glycol and phenoxyethanol sit in the back half, where Elixir Ultime has neither a water phase nor a preservative. It is dyed, with CI 26100 and CI 47000 doing nothing for hair. And the keratin amino acids sit below the argan in a list whose top three slots are two isoalkanes and a silicone, so the film is doing the work, not the protein.

Buy it for everyday smoothing under $10. For the whole Kérastase object, scent included, pay for the Redken.
