It is a well-made ferment essence that hydrates reliably, sinks in under a minute and never pills under anything. It is not $220 good. Lancôme states 10 percent bifidus prebiotic; a $21 Korean serum states 42 percent of the same ferment. That ratio, and what the other $199 buys, is the rest of this review.

What is Lancôme Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Serum?

Génifique is Lancôme's flagship treatment serum, launched in 2009 and reformulated several times since; US retailers now sell it as Advanced Génifique Radiance-Boosting Hydrating Serum. The current pitch is hyaluronic acid plus 10 percent bifidus prebiotic, with a brand claim of visibly hydrated, plumper, more even skin in seven days.

The texture is closer to a Korean essence than a Western serum: a clear, slightly slippery liquid that spreads thin and disappears fast. The self-loading dropper draws a measured dose per press, so you waste less than with a squeeze pipette. It is the best applicator in this price bracket.

Sizes matter for the maths. Lancôme's US site lists 0.67, 1.0 and 1.7 fl oz, a 1.7 fl oz refill, and 3.8 fl oz; the 3.4 oz bottle priced below is Nordstrom's.

What are the key ingredients in Advanced Génifique?

Per Skincarisma's ingredient breakdown, the list opens: Water, Bifida Ferment Lysate, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat., Dimethicone, Hydroxyethylpiperazine Ethane Sulfonic Acid, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate, of 24 ingredients total.

Bifida ferment lysate sits second, which is the strongest thing about the formula. It is a postbiotic with reasonable evidence behind barrier support and hydration, and the same headline ingredient that carries Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair. Lancôme puts the figure at 10 percent, which is more disclosure than most Western brands bother with, and still four times less than the Korean serum further down.

Alcohol denat. is fourth, ahead of dimethicone. Lancôme does not state its percentage and I am not going to invent one. What the position tells you is that in a leave-on product used twice daily it is present in more than trace amounts, and that it is what produces the fast-drying finish.

Sixth is HEPES, a pH buffer that also loosens dead surface cells, which is where the smoothness people notice in week one comes from. Ascorbyl glucoside follows at seven. It is a stable vitamin C derivative, weaker than pure ascorbic acid and dependent on a high concentration. Seventh, behind the alcohol, is not that. Sodium hyaluronate lands eighth.

Fragrance is declared rather than buried, but there is a fair amount of it for a serum sold to ageing skin: limonene at 19, citronellol at 23, parfum last at 24. Skincarisma also flags PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil as a fungal-acne trigger, which matters if you get malassezia breakouts.

How does Advanced Génifique perform?

It leaves no film, and it layers under sunscreen and makeup without pilling, which is uncommon here and is largely the dimethicone earning its place at five.

What it delivers consistently is hydration and surface smoothness, plus the temporary plumping that reads as a healthier finish. Skin looks less crepey by the end of the first week. That effect is real, and it is also what any competent humectant essence produces.

What it does not do is behave like a retinoid or an acid. Lancôme's own seven-day claim covers hydration, plumping and evenness, which is a moisture claim rather than a structural one. Read it as an anti-ageing treatment and month three will disappoint you.

The scent is a soft rose that fades within a minute. Pleasant if you like that. A dealbreaker if your skin reacts to fragrance.

Is Advanced Génifique good for sensitive or dry skin?

For sensitive skin, no. Alcohol denat. in fourth position plus parfum, limonene and citronellol is a combination most dermatologists steer reactive skin away from, and Lancôme sells a separate Advanced Génifique Sensitive Antioxidant Serum precisely because the main formula does not suit everyone.

For dry skin it works as a hydration layer but not as your only step: the light texture needs a cream over the top or the water you just added evaporates off. On a compromised barrier, leave it until things settle. Oily and normal skin get the best of it.

That 4.7 is worth reading for what it measures: how the serum feels, wears and layers, which is where Génifique is genuinely strong. It cannot tell you the same ferment sells for a fifth of the price elsewhere.

Is Advanced Génifique worth the price?

For most people, no. numbuzin's No.3 Skin Softening Serum opens its INCI list with bifida ferment lysate at a stated 42 percent, adds galactomyces ferment filtrate at 21 percent, and costs $21 for 50 ml at Ulta, reduced from $28, checked 26 August 2026.
