MAC Mineralize Blush in Petal Power Review

The Insider Score

Powder blushes
4.4out of 5

Coral pink when you face the mirror, gold when you turn.

Petal Power is the MAC shade we’d choose for colour and visible gold sheen in the same sweep. The baked powder builds gently, so it’s easy to stop before the reflection overtakes the blush.

I liked how the coral pink and gold looked together on my cheeks.

The gold is as important as the pink

MAC Petal Power looks like a warm pink blush until the cheek turns towards the light. Then the gold shimmer becomes just as visible as the colour underneath. That’s the reason I’d choose this particular Mineralize Blush. A matte coral and a gold highlighter can give a similar colour combination, but there is something especially pretty about having the pink and gold travel together in the same sweep of a brush.

In the compact it’s a domed, baked powder. A loosely packed brush takes a light wash from the surface. A denser brush puts more of both the pigment and the reflection in one spot. I’d start soft, especially if the foundation underneath already has a glow. You can always deepen the centre of the cheek after seeing the first layer in daylight.

Put the reflection where it belongs

Pick up a little powder and tap off the excess. Place the first touch at the upper cheek, where you’d normally consider putting a highlight, then soften the lower edge with what’s left on the brush. If you apply the heaviest part near the nose, the shimmer draws the eye there as readily as the pink does. Turn slightly towards a window before deciding where the next sweep belongs.

Petal Power is particularly easy to pair with a matte bronzer. Keep the warmth around the outside of the face, then let the pink and gold sit a little higher and further forward. If you like a stronger highlight, add it only after the blush. A narrow touch above the cheekbone is often all that is needed.

When I’d spend $34

I’d pay for Petal Power when this exact coral-pink and gold combination is a shade I expect to wear several times a week. The compact holds 3.2 g. Milani Luminoso is a less expensive way to get a luminous cheek, but it leans peach and gives a different effect next to a pink lip.

For someone who wants colour to stay matte and highlight to sit in one very precise place, two separate products give more control. Petal Power is at its best when the sheen is part of what you want from your blush.
