Best travel makeup bag: four useful choices for different packing styles

My verdict: I'd choose BÉIS The Cosmetic Case for a dedicated makeup setup with brushes, CALPAK Small Clear for seeing everything at a glance, and BAGGU's Go Pouch Set for dividing a small routine across bags. BAGSMART Blast is my lower-cost hanging option when toiletries and makeup need to share space. Before buying, measure your longest brush and largest palette. Those matter more than how many days the trip lasts.

Five quick takeaways

  • Best dedicated makeup case: BÉIS The Cosmetic Case, $78, includes a mirror and removable brush holder, but weighs 1.38 lb empty.
  • Best clear case: CALPAK Small Clear Cosmetics Case, usually $75, has two compartments and a compact shape. The checked Glazed Dark Cherry color is currently $63.75 and final sale.
  • Best flexible pouch system: BAGGU Go Pouch Set, $44, gives you three sizes in machine-washable recycled nylon.
  • Best budget hanging option: BAGSMART Blast 4.5L, $29.99, has a swivel hook and machine-washable nylon construction.
  • Clear doesn't automatically mean airport-compliant: a makeup case and the quart-sized liquids bag required at US security serve different purposes.

Prices checked October 29, 2026, before tax and shipping. The CALPAK discount applies to the selected color and can end. Dimensions are manufacturers' measurements, not a promise that a similarly sized palette will fit through the opening. BAGGU's larger pouch sizes are below; print availability can vary.

I compared construction, care instructions, dimensions and organization, alongside published travel-packing experience. A beautifully organized case is still the wrong one if you struggle to fit it in your suitcase.

BÉIS The Cosmetic Case: for a proper makeup setup

BÉIS The Cosmetic Case in Black costs $78. Its built-in mirror and removable brush holder are the reason I'd consider spending that much. You can lift the holder out at your destination instead of fishing through a pile of pencils and compacts every morning.

The case measures 9.5 inches wide, 4 inches high and 7 inches deep. It has a polyurethane body, PVC trim and a polyester lining with a water-resistant finish. The care instruction is spot clean, so I would deal with a foundation mark promptly rather than assume the whole case can go into the washing machine.

I like this layout for someone whose travel makeup involves several brushes and separate face, cheek and eye products. It gives those tools a deliberate place. Before ordering, I'd compare the brush holder's layout in the product photographs with my own brushes: a holder's existence doesn't prove that every long or unusually thick handle will fit comfortably.

The compromise is weight and structure. At 1.38 lb empty, the case accounts for some luggage allowance before a single product goes in. I'd be more willing to carry that on a trip with generous luggage space than on a tightly packed backpack weekend. If your whole routine is mascara, concealer and a lip color, the mirror and brush holder probably don't justify the bulk or price.

CALPAK Small Clear Cosmetics Case: for seeing what you've packed

The CALPAK Small Clear Cosmetics Case in Glazed Dark Cherry is $63.75 at the checked sale price, reduced from $75. This color is marked final sale, which would make me measure carefully before buying.

It measures 8.25 × 6 × 4 inches and weighs 0.85 lb. The PU-and-PVC body has a polyester lining, with clear panels, two zipped compartments and a wipeable interior. I'd choose it for a compact routine where being able to spot the correct tube is more useful than having a separate slot for every item.

The Beauty Look Book's January 2025 packing report describes using the Small case for around two years and recommends it for a smaller kit. The same report praises the larger Medium for a two-week road trip but notes how much suitcase room it occupies. Those are different sizes; I wouldn't transfer the Medium's packing capacity to this Small recommendation.

My suggested arrangement would be compacts and pencils on one side, capped tubes on the other, with brushes protected separately if they don't fit neatly.

The drawbacks are the price and fixed shape. Even at the sale price, this is a substantial purchase for a small case. And clear walls don't make it a quart-sized airport liquids bag. I'd choose it because I want visible organization, not because a product photograph makes flying with liquids look effortless.

BAGGU Go Pouch Set: for splitting the routine into smaller bags

BAGGU's Go Pouch Set in Pop Happy Mix is $44 for three pouches. They are made from recycled heavyweight nylon and are machine washable. They expand when filled and lie flat when empty, which is useful if you don't want a rigid case occupying the same space throughout a trip.

The small pouch expands to 4 × 6.75 × 2.25 inches; the medium to 7 × 10.5 × 4.25 inches; and the large to 9.5 × 14 × 6 inches, in height, width and length respectively. Those are three quite different sizes, not three interchangeable little makeup bags.

I'd use the small one for a few touch-up products and consider the medium for the rest of the makeup routine. The large pouch could serve another packing job. You don't need to fill all three with cosmetics simply because they arrive together.

This is the option I'd favor when a travel bag also needs to work inside an everyday tote. You can leave most products at the accommodation and carry only what you intend to reapply.

The drawback is the lack of dedicated structure. These are general-purpose pouches, so I'd put delicate compacts and brushes in appropriate protective packaging rather than count on soft nylon to protect them from everything else in a suitcase. The set is less compelling if you only need one small pouch and have no use for the others. Machine washability is useful, but follow the care label rather than guessing a cycle or dryer setting.

BAGSMART Blast 4.5L: for a shared makeup-and-toiletries kit

The BAGSMART Blast 4.5L Hanging Toiletry Bag in Peyote is $29.99. I'd choose it when keeping bottles and makeup together matters more than having a dedicated cosmetic case.

The nylon bag measures 10.24 × 4.72 × 5.9 inches and weighs 0.66 lb. A rotating hook lets it hang, while elastic straps, mesh pockets and transparent zipped sections give different types of products somewhere to go. The current product page explicitly lists it as machine washable, an advantage over a case that can only be spot cleaned.

For a small hotel bathroom, the hook is the feature I'd value most. I would check the accommodation photographs for a useful place to hang it rather than assume a hook solves every cramped setup. On a crowded counter, being able to keep the main kit off the surface can make getting ready simpler.

The compromise is that its organization is designed around toiletries as well as makeup. A collection of slim pencils, loose brushes and flat palettes may not use that space especially efficiently. I'd consider a separate small brush sleeve rather than letting bristles sit against bottles.

BAGSMART describes a waterproof front pocket, but I wouldn't treat that as a guarantee that the entire bag contains a leaking bottle. Keep caps secure and separate anything prone to spills. Also check the delivered price: shipping can narrow the apparent saving on a single inexpensive bag.

How I'd work out the right size before buying

First, lay out the products you genuinely plan to use. Our best makeup edit can help if you're still deciding which products earn a place, but packing isn't a reason to buy a miniature version of everything. One familiar cheek color is often a more sensible choice than several new ones that need different brushes.

Measure the longest and widest items. A case can have a generous stated volume and still be awkward for a broad palette or a long brush. Allow room for the lining, corners and opening; external dimensions aren't usable internal clearance. I'd also leave enough space to put items back without rebuilding a puzzle every morning.

Then think about where the bag will sit at your destination. A structured case makes sense on a dressing table. A hanging organizer is useful when counter space is scarce. Separate pouches make sense when part of the routine needs to move into a handbag during the day.

Trip length comes after those decisions. Toiletry quantities may grow; the number of eye palettes usually doesn't need to.

Pack liquids separately for the airport

For cosmetic liquids, creams, gels and aerosols in a US carry-on, the TSA travel checklist specifies containers of 3.4 oz/100 ml or less within one clear, quart-sized, zip-top bag per passenger. A larger cosmetic case doesn't become compliant merely because you can see through it.

I'd prepare that liquids bag before filling the rest of the makeup case, keeping it accessible for screening. Check the current rules for your departure and transfer airports, especially on international trips. A road-trip packing list is useful inspiration, but it doesn't establish what you can take through an airport checkpoint.

FAQs

Is a clear makeup bag better than an opaque one?

It is better for visibility if that is your main frustration. An opaque pouch may be easier to reuse for other items, and you might prefer not to have every product on show. I'd prioritize the opening, dimensions and cleaning instructions first. A clear case that doesn't fit your palette is no improvement.

Can I machine wash a travel makeup bag?

Only when the care instructions permit it. BAGGU's Go Pouch Set and the current BAGSMART Blast are listed as machine washable. BÉIS specifies spot cleaning, while CALPAK highlights its wipeable lining. Empty the bag first and follow the label for the washing and drying method. A wipeable interior doesn't establish that the entire case is washable.

Should makeup brushes go in the same bag as makeup?

They can, provided their heads are protected and they aren't pressed against loose powder or leaking tubes. BÉIS includes a removable holder; with the other options I'd consider a separate sleeve or pouch. Pack brushes completely dry after cleaning. I would rather carry fewer useful brushes with room around them than squeeze in a full collection and bend the bristles.
