The best lip liners for a clean line, a softer edge or an $8 budget

I'd choose MAC Lip Pencil for precise definition and a useful choice of brown, rose and red shades. NYX Line Loud is my $8 pick, provided you don't mind sharpening a softer pencil. For a makeup bag that never seems to contain a sharpener, I'd buy Revlon ColorStay. The deciding factor is the shade against your own lips: an excellent formula in the wrong undertone can still look quite wrong.

- MAC Lip Pencil is my first choice for control. Its sharpenable tip suits a deliberate outline, especially when you want to adjust a small area rather than redraw the whole lip.
- NYX Line Loud is the best place to start at $8. It gives you soft-matte color, but reports of difficult sharpening are a real reservation.
- Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat needs a shade check. Pillow Talk Fair, original Pillow Talk and Pillow Talk Medium differ in undertone as well as depth.
- Makeup by Mario is worth considering for a blended edge. The attached brush is useful if you usually soften liner into lipstick or gloss.
- Revlon ColorStay is my retractable pick. Its built-in sharpener can refine the point, though the pencil contains much less product than the full-size sharpenable options here.

MAC Lip Pencil: my pick for precise definition
MAC is where I'd start if I knew the look I wanted but needed to find the right undertone. Its current US range includes 35 shades, with a matte, full-coverage finish. The traditional pencil lets you restore a fine point rather than keep working with a rounded tip. MAC's product details
The browns deserve a closer look than simply choosing the most familiar name. MAC describes Chestnut as an intense brown; Cork is a muted golden brown. I'd compare those for depth and warmth before deciding which belongs beside a particular lipstick. A deeper brown can make a pale lip color more wearable as part of a blended combination, but that doesn't make either shade a natural match for every lip.
In Who What Wear's editor testing, Humaa found Cool Spice firm enough for precise work without feeling harsh. She also found it less moisturizing than softer pencils. That is the compromise I'd expect someone choosing control to consider: a clean border matters more here than the feel of a creamy lip crayon.
I'd use MAC to define the Cupid's bow, correct an uneven corner or create a brown outline with a lighter center. If you want to color the entire lip and leave it bare, comfort deserves more weight. Don't buy a firmer-feeling pencil just because it holds a neat point.
My buying judgment: spend the $25 when MAC has the shade you've been missing. At $17 more than NYX, the undertone and pencil feel need to earn the difference.
NYX Line Loud: my best choice under $10
Line Loud costs $8 for 0.04 oz at Ulta. NYX describes a soft-matte, waterproof formula, and the shade menu is unusually useful if beige-pink pencils keep letting you down. Rebel Kind is listed as deep neutral brown, Global Citizen as warm nude and On a Mission as blue red. Those descriptions give you something specific to compare. NYX's shade and formula details
I like the low cost of trying a different undertone. Three $8 pencils cost $24, slightly less than one MAC, although I'd still start with one shade rather than buy three guesses.
The softer formula needs some care. The Cat Edit's review found that it sets quickly and advised applying and blending in sections. That makes it a better prospect for someone who can finish one side of the lip before moving on than someone who likes to spend several minutes adjusting a blurred outline.
Sharpening is the other concern. Ulta reviewers include complaints about breakage and uneven sharpening, even from people who like the pigment. I'd keep the point short, use light pressure and stop if the casing has a rough edge. It is a sharpenable pencil, despite an appearance that can suggest a twist-up design.
My buying judgment: the sensible $8 starting point for a defined, matte lip. Choose Revlon instead if keeping a pencil sharp is the part you already dislike. For the deep neutral-brown shade, see Rebel Kind on Amazon.
Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat: for pink and rose definition
Lip Cheat is my choice when the brief is a softly defined pink lip rather than a dark brown outline. The full-size pencil costs $28 for 1.2 g, making it the most expensive purchase in this shortlist. Original Pillow Talk is described as nude pink, while the brand calls Pillow Talk Fair a cooler pink and Pillow Talk Medium a warm berry-pink.
Those names aren't a compulsory ladder based on your foundation shade. I'd compare them against the natural color around the edge of your lips. Fair might be the direction to investigate if you want a cooler pink; Medium makes more sense if you want berry warmth and additional depth. Neither description replaces seeing the color beside your own mouth.
There is a useful warning in Good Housekeeping's guide: Jessica Teich found original Pillow Talk could look too orange against her olive complexion and preferred Medium. That is one person's shade experience, but it explains why a popular pink should never be treated as a universal nude.
I'd blend the inner edge into lipstick, leaving the outside line tidy. For a mostly clear-gloss look, check that the pencil color still makes sense when the center of the lip is visible. A beautiful lipstick pairing can look quite different with the lipstick removed.
My buying judgment: worth $28 for a specific shade you love. I wouldn't pay the premium for the Pillow Talk name alone.
Makeup by Mario Ultra Suede: for a softer, blended edge
The attached brush is the reason I'd choose this over MAC. Ultra Suede is a full-coverage matte pencil with a brush at the opposite end, costing $26 for 1.4 g. If you regularly use a separate lip brush to soften a darker outline, the design removes one thing from your bag. Sephora's product specifications
Mario's shade descriptions are helpful too: Kevin is pinky mauve, Daniel warm spiced brown and Jeff intense deep brown. I'd choose the color family first, then decide how much contrast I want with the center lip color. The palest beige isn't automatically the most natural option. Makeup by Mario's current shades
ELLE editor Emma Aerin Becker reports that the pencil blends easily with its brush and wears well under gloss. The same ELLE guide lists brush fraying as a drawback. That matters when the brush is the reason to spend more: replace the cap carefully rather than crushing the bristles against its edge.
I'd draw the outline first, then use the brush to move the inner edge toward the center. Keep the brush away from the outer border if you want to preserve the shape you've just drawn.
My buying judgment: a useful $26 choice for blending. If you prefer a crisp line and already own a lip brush, there's less reason to choose it over MAC or NYX.
Revlon ColorStay Longwear: for a pencil you can keep in your bag
Revlon's twist-up format and built-in sharpener make it my practical pick for touch-ups. You can expose a little color and use the small sharpener when the point needs refining. The brand's regular price is $10.99; the full-size pencil is only 0.01 oz. Revlon's product page and Raisin size listing
That quantity is a quarter of NYX's stated 0.04 oz. It doesn't prove Revlon will last a quarter as long, since sharpening and application affect how much gets used. It does mean that a lower purchase price isn't the whole value calculation.
I'd expose only a small amount of pencil and keep it capped in a bag. Revlon now describes an updated formula, so I wouldn't buy it on the strength of an older wear-time review. Current shades include Raisin, Chocolate, Mauve and Red; I'd check the actual swatches rather than assume the shade called Nude is my match.
My buying judgment: buy for the format. For someone who fills in both lips every day, NYX offers more product for $2.99 less at these regular prices.
Choosing a shade without buying another wrong nude
Start with the lip product you already wear. For a close match, compare the liner with that color. For definition under clear gloss, compare it with your own lip edge. For a darker outline, choose the amount of contrast deliberately and blend inward.
Depth and undertone are separate decisions. A pencil can be dark enough but too orange, or cool enough but too pale. If brown liners keep turning warm, compare a neutral brown or mauve rather than simply moving another shade darker. Check swatches on a complexion and natural lip color similar to yours, preferably in daylight.
I would buy one liner for my most-used lip color before building a collection. Our guide to the best lip products can help with the lipstick or gloss that goes alongside it.
Lip liner questions
Should lip liner be darker than lipstick?
Only if you want visible definition or a gradient. A close color match is easier for a discreet outline. With a darker liner, soften the inner edge into the lipstick so the contrast looks intentional. MAC's application guidance also recommends overlapping the lipstick and liner when creating a contoured lip.
Is retractable lip liner better than a pencil you sharpen?
Retractable liner is more convenient; a sharpenable pencil gives you control over the point. Revlon combines a twist-up mechanism with a small sharpener, while Mario adds a brush to a traditional pencil. I'd choose around the step I actually use, then check the amount of product inside.
Can you wear lip liner without lipstick?
Yes. Fill in the lips for an even matte color, or blend the liner inward and add gloss or balm. MAC and Makeup by Mario both describe all-over use. If the result feels dry, use less liner and add a comfortable top layer; don't assume a pencil will feel like a lipstick just because both provide color.
